What is Drug Court ?
Drug court is a
special division of the court system that is responsible for
handling cases involving drug offenders. As an alternative to jail
time, offenders are offered treatment containing the following
criteria:
drug testing
|
treatment
services
|
comprehensive supervision
|
immediate
sanctions
achievement incentives
Drug court programs carry the full
weight of all those involved in the legal system & treatment system
(judges, prosecutors, defense counsel, substance abuse treatment
specialists, probation officers, law enforcement and correctional
personnel, educational and vocational experts, community leaders and
others). This forces the offender to deal with and face his / her
substance abuse problem or face the alternative of jail time.
Today, there are well over 1200 Drug Courts in existence throughout
the U.S. |
